I don't know what the star ratings really mean anyway. For an ephemeral film, what are we rating? Humor? Excellence in presentation? Historical value? If I'm a railroad buff, I'll rate a film highly if it contains valuable historical imagery. If I'm a telephone history phreak, I'll give "Nation At Your Fingertips" 5 stars and Perversion for Profit 1. I collect films-as-evidence, not simply films-as-entertainment, and since films with evidentiary value are sometimes entertaining and entertaining films sometimes evidentiary, I don't really know what it means to rate something high or low. So anyway...forgive me if I'm not expressing myself clearly, but I don't like having to rate a film in order to annotate or comment on it. Just my 2 cents, as people say on the Internet.

I definitely agree that the 'all annotations in the form of review with a rating' system is frustrating. In addition to the difficulty of adding a number value to a review, a lot times I want to add a comment to movie without reviewing it (eg, add or ask for a simple bit of information, respond to something a reviewer said, discuss issues the movie raises).

Sometimes I think giving each movie its own forum like this one would be a nice solution to this sort of non-review annotation. However, I suspect at the least this would require more time to set up than the archive can afford.

Good point. On some level, everything in the Medicus collection of 1939 World's Fair films is five stars for me, but I'm an amusement park and World's Fair buff. The stars, in my case, are usually just an indicator of how excited I was because of some oddball detail.

If you think it was so great, then why did you give it only 1 star?

Oh, I forgot, we really shouldn't pay much attention to the star system...

jack, you've given your share of 1 star reviews (including to my film, which other people seem to like). but that's your right.
so why is it wrong when someone else does it? it's just his opinion, like all reviews (including yours).

and what's all this about praising bare feet?

on second thought, i don't wanna know...

I have NEVER said that giving 1 star ratings was wrong. I challenged H finn,s review because I thought that he was totally illinformed. I suggested that going barefoot m ight start him thinking about the disgraceful, disgusting state of the shoe industry. Yes, I gave a 1 star rating to your film and yes some people like it. I was hoping that you would try to justify your PROPAGANDA

Thank you for understanding my original post. I should have given more information and written a better statement. The film shows how manufacturing was done in the right way, many years ago by free workers in a demoracracy.. Now today, shoes , clothing, toys and so on are imported and made by poorly paid workers with few political rights (often living in dictatorships) Corporations prosper and democracy suffers. Thanks, again.

I always pictured Huck Finn as being barefoot anyway...

"Huck was sitting on the gunwale of a flatboat, listlessly dangling his feet in the water and looking very melancholy." -- Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

Really wouldn't do to have his shoes on in that scene, would it?

Actually I thought of my film as a parody, as defined here:

par·o·dy  n. pl. par·o·dies
1. a. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule.
b. The genre of literature comprising such works.

2. Something so bad as to be equivalent to intentional mockery; a travesty: The trial was a parody of justice.

3. The practice of reworking an already established composition, especially the incorporation of material borrowed from other works.

Anyone who would take my little movie seriously as some kind of doctrine has much bigger problems than pornography...

Anyway, I hope we can disagree without any hard feelings. I really don't mean to offend.

HIS propaganda??

(Or should I say his PROPAGANDA?)

Once again, you've floored me Jack, to what the hey you're talking about, how is Trafalgar's film propaganda? Do you know what even you're talking about?

PS, Still trying to find anyone who also says that Harry Langdon is often ranked as a great comedian, equally with Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

PPS Have you managed to find a software program that will let you tint the sky blue in your movies (you know, like you say that they did in the silent days and could not do with sound film).. Didn't know they had the software to do that in the silent days...

to POTSIE2 If you want info on Harry Langdon, just read a book on silent film history and then correct any errors by me. If you go to a movie rental store or search on internet (amazon ,etc)you will find that many silent movie DVD,s are stated to be TINTED
